Berlin: City of Stones and Berlin: City of Smoke by Jason Lutes – a messy review by Sarah Wilson, a non-comic reading sociologist With a new instalment out, it might be a good time to offer something on the series….before knowing the fate of too many of the characters and giving too much away. I have a horrible feeling that the story might end where … Continue reading Drowning in Berlin
The Penned Guins by Alan Henderson I can only surmise that at an early age Alan was taken to Edinburgh Zoo. He marveled at the meercats, was terrified by the tigers and reveled in the rhinoceroses. Then as one o’clock struck he saw an amazing sight. A line of small creatures wobbling towards him, dressed like waiters and smelling of fish. Waiters in a fish … Continue reading Castle Greyscale
Alex Automatic issue 3. Fraser Campbell, Colin Bell, David B Cooper and James Corcoran. This is the third issue of the super-spy psycho-thriller Alex Automatic from Cabal Comics and among the Kickstarter rewards was a soundtrack (from Allan Swan) that may put you in mind of a freaky 70’s kids TV show with a BBC Radiophonic Workshop theme tune. Think Dr Who but less wholesome. … Continue reading Automatic for the Sheeple
L1MA by Gustaffo Vargas One of the surprise finds of Thought Bubble for me was L1MA by Gustaffo Vargas. Peruvian cyberpunk is probably a fairly unique genre and Lima is a unique book. The principle character in this book is the city itself. Lima – a high-altitude techno hellhole. From the flat roofs (Lima is one of the driest cities on earth) to the forests … Continue reading Mala Ciudad
NPC Tea by Sarah Millman Hannah Nayar is a student. Young, keen but feeling a bit out of place amongst some of the posh kids at uni. She also needs a job. The Y Draig tea shop is just the place, especially if you are a student of magic. Y Draig is a bit special. Not only is it Cardiff’s least popular tea shop (tip: … Continue reading Tea for Tuatha
Lycan by Rachel Cush Bears, ravens. What comes next for the intrepid comics reviewer? Well as the nights darken and the cold winds begin to shriek in anguish through the trees it has to be wolves. Werewolves to be specific. It’s not easy being a young person making their way in the modern workplace. Zero hours contracts, the gig economy. If, like Felix, you are … Continue reading Zero Howls Contract
Valravn by Zhou Fang Zhou Fang is the SICBA award winning author of Garden. Garden is an arresting work of imagination which fully deserves the praise it has garnered and I really should be reviewing it, but instead I’m taking a look at Valravn. This short comic tells a tale from Viking Denmark. The Valravn is a raven of great cunning…power and trickery…It would not … Continue reading That’s so Valravn
Death and the Bear (A Fable) by Paul Tonner Upon perusing Google maps recently I discovered that I dwelt near to a rather unusual business. To be precise it was a Shamanistic Healing Centre. I had hoped that they would allow me to travel the spirit plane to find a fox spirit or maybe a squirrel to guide me through my next annual review. But … Continue reading Bear Necessities
The Stowaways – The Story of the Boys on the Ice by John Donald – adapted by Ardgowan Primary School with artist Mhairi M Robertson and writer Paul Bristow Magic Torch comics are doing amazing work with Scottish schools using comics to promote literacy. You may have seen their brilliant history/comics mash-ups including the story of the Stone of Destiny heist in the style of … Continue reading Defrosting History
Finding Home by Hari Conner I have spent many years travelling and seldom settled for long. I suppose I do not have a home to miss. – Chepi Home is not always you were born, it’s not always where you live. Janek is travelling home, he is far away and longs to get back. Janek is a skilled chef, warm, comfort loving. He finds a … Continue reading Veridian Voyaging
The Writings and Ramblings of Ben Herman
This is a blog dedicated to what I have been lucky enough to find out about comics. I might add in some other geeky goodness, but it's mainly about the comics.
